Kami tak nak lawan, hanya nak makan

Well it’s official, Gambier Street wet market was closed by the local authorities last Sunday. This brings to an end the existence of a market which has stood on the site since the 1860s.
For all the pictures one could take of the food:

the real story ultimately is that of the people whose lives are entwined with that of the market. Whether they’d be the traders or the customers. Being there on Saturday during the market’s last day of trading, the gang was, I guess, witnessing history taking place first-hand. As one of the aunty traders I talked to put it: better take lotsa pictures for memory’s sake.

If you’re wondering why all the photos in the Gambier.Portraits look like that, it’s because I set them all to the Aged Photo preset. It felt…I dunno…appropriate.:-P
On a side note, some issues to note from this photo shoot:
1. 6 am wake-ups mess with my camera eye.:-P
2. I had some problems with the auto selection of the AF points with the 50mm f/1.8 which I was using primarily for this shoot. On hindsight, could’ve taken more time to make sure that the eyes of the portrait subjects are the focus point.
3. Really need to learn how to effectively tackle exposure issues in situations where I’m shooting against a bright background. *sighs*

Great job there.. Hehehe. You learned fast ya.. Anyway, try using the fill light option in lightroom. It does help a little I find that.. Probably first lower down the exposure then increase the fill light. That’s what I do.
You managed to covered up pretty much a lot ya.. Hehehe. It’s all good
Practice makes perfect.. And probably you might need to start using RAW soon.. Hehehe..

Alex: ok only lah. Need to get the hang of a few things like focal points and moving in closer to subject as CK says. but yeah, practice makes perfect.:-)
Wombok: still struggling to come up with 8 random facts
Pazuzu: welcome welcome! i think this Govt will always give priority to ‘development’ (=$$$ mah…). there is a sarawak heritage society rite? hopefully that organisation and others will pressure the Govt to change their minds…

Another photo shoot session that I’ve missed coz I need to prep for my class that morning … sob sob
Now that Gambier Street is deserted, I feel kinda melancholy about it. It was the very life of old kuching town. Everywhere in town seems much quieter too with the recent petrol hike >_>
