Photograph 101- Sunday Market

November 5, 2007

Was up bright and early yesterday to join CK & gang for another practical class. Our assignment: Sunday Market. The arranged meeting time was 8 am and I had got there first with about 15 minutes to spare. So took some shots on and around the bridge whilst waiting for the rest to show up.

Satok Road

The long straight road somehow reminded me of Paris and its long boulevards. Kuching is no Paris of course but that’s not to say it isn’t lovely in its own way. :-)

Vans

I liked how the vendors had parked their vans in neat rows.

Tight parking

It sure was a tight squeeze between the rows! I had to turn myself sideways in order to pass through it. :-P

Soon enough, the rest of the gang arrived. Short briefing by CK on capturing street scenes (shoot from waist-level or from high up) and patterns (look for odd one out) before we were released into the crowds to do our thing. When we finally finished some 3 hours later, I had taken some 120 pictures! o_O I already had trouble picking photos from the last class and I had only taken 50 shots then. So, 120?! Nightmare. :-P In the end, I took the gang’s advice and settled on a theme.

After 30 minutes of ruthless culling I’m left with 39 shots. Still a lot to put up in a blog post so I’ve selected my favourites.

Theme: mostly kids

I noticed that the great majority of my pictures all have people in them. Kids especially. Perhaps it was something in the air that morning but I really connected with the children at the native produce section. Most of my shots actually are of 3 siblings, Adriana, Yus and ‘Kevin’. They were a bit shy at first but after showing them my shots on the camera screen, boy did they really open up! :-) Photographing them really was the highlight of the morning.

Anyway, when the rest of the crew load up their pics, there should be some interesting comparisons to be made in terms of our subject matter. :-) I somehow found it easier to photograph people than inanimate stuff. I couldn’t for the life of me, see the lines that everyone else seemed to see. CK says it’s because I need more practice with lines. Yeah, amongst others. *LOL* Looking for lines was akin to my painfully fruitless attempts at looking at those weird 3D pictures that were all the rage in the mid-90s. You know, the ones where if you stare at them long enough, they are suppose to suddenly appear 3D etc etc. Was useless at those pictures. Hmm…bet those 3D pictures are having the last laugh at me now.
